Preparation Madrid | what to do

The city trip to Madrid will be a 5-day trip with 5 friends. We like visiting a museum, walking around the city and spotting cute stores along the way. My preparation for this trip consists of searching for things to do (this post) and places to eat (Preparation Madrid |where to eat). We would have plenty of time in Madrid, so I knew that we would not have to hurry to see all of the city. I listed the things that I wanted to do below. You can find all the things that I listed on the map, followed by pictures and a short description of each thing.

Shopping

If you are looking for big shops like Zara and h&m, Calle Gran Via is the one. That said, we are more interested in the unique shops. I searched for the prettiest shops, and have listed them below.

El Paracaidista

A beautiful concept store that has everything u need. It has three floors of unique clothes, furniture, and books. On the fourth floor, there is a rooftop bar.

This is a concept store for the interior. It gives you a bit of a jungle feel when you go in. It also has a bar.

A concept store that combines decoration, stationery, and clothes.

Do design

You can find furniture, gifts, and clothes here. Besides that, there is sometimes a little exhibition and you can have a coffee here.

AMEN

Here you will find cool designer clothes, jewelry, and accessories.

An art gallery that focuses on graphic design and illustrations.

Monuments/culture

Madrid has various things to visit. There are a few musea, parks and monuments that are certainly worth visiting. Most of them do not have an entrance cost.

Parque Del Buen Retiro

The Retiro Park is the perfect place to relax or have a picnic. It is a very beautiful and big park and has a pond and various monuments in it. The impressive Palacio de Cristal is also located in the park.

Templo de Debod

This Egyptian temple, that was a gift for Spain, is beautiful to look at from the outside, but you can also visit the inside.

Palacio de Cristal

This building in the Retiro park, almost entirely glass, can be visited during the day. The building also functions as an exhibition space, so you can often admire some artworks.

Reina Sofia

The biggest museum of modern art in Madrid. It has artworks several great artists, and you can see the Guernica of Pablo Picasso here.

Plaza Mayor

This plaza is one of the most famous, beautiful and oldest plazas of Madrid. It is a real tourist attraction and has cafés, souvenir shops, and restaurants.

Train station of Madrid: Puerta de Atocha

The train station of Madrid is a beautiful historical building, but what makes it special is the big trees in the middle of the station.

Plaza de Cibeles

A very busy roundabout with a fountain in the middle. There are many big and beautiful buildings surrounding the plaza.

CaixaForum

A museum for both modern and ancient art. There is a vertical garden on the side of the museum.

Casa de Campo

The biggest park in Madrid. It has a zoo as wel as a theme park in it.

Almudena Cathedral

The cathedral of Madrid. You can also visit the crypt.

Palacio Real

The royal palace of Madrid. To visit the palace, you have to buy a ticket. There are also very beautiful gardens and the entrance for these gardens is free.

El Matadero

A former slaughterhouse that is converted to an art center. They offer exhibitions and theaters.

Mercados

Something you should eat in Spain is tapas. And what is a better place to eat tapas than in a food market? You can also just walk through the markets and enjoy the atmosphere.

Mercado de San Miguel

The central market in Madrid, you can find various tapas here. Also the oldest food market in the city.

Mercado de San Ildefonso

Urban food market of three floors, with a terrace if you want to enjoy a cocktail in the sun.

Mercado San Anton

A fairly new and modern food market in the trendy neighborhood of Chueca. You can buy fresh ingredients or you can eat a whole meal or tapas there. It also has a terrace.
